Retired Engineer

All Retired WV PE Licenses expire on December 31, 2026. Please note the 2027 - 2028 Retired PE Renewal System will be activated for log in and use no later than December 1, 2026.

Please note WV Engineering Law requires our agency to send notification at least 30 days prior to the expiration of your license, meaning no later than December 1st of odd numbered years for COAs and December 1st of even numbered years for Active PEs and Retired. Renewal notifications are mailed in late November and our online renewal system is activated at the same time. If needed, you will also receive courtesy email reminders during the renewal season to your record email address(es) last provided to our agency.

Inactive/Lapsed Status

The current renewal season, and additional one-month grace period, is closed. Any registrant (Professional Engineer or Retired Engineer) who did not renew their license is now either in "Inactive" status by official request or "Lapsed" status based on administrative procedure. Any entity (company, firm, etc) that did not renew their Certificate of Authorization is now is now either in "Inactive" status by official request or "Lapsed" status based on administrative procedure. Any PE or firm that defaulted to a lapsed status received a certified letter stating they failed to respond to the recent renewal request and have automatically been placed in "Lapsed" status. According to the WV Code, it is illegal for any person or firm with such status to practice or even offer to provide engineering services in West Virginia until they have been approved by the WV PE Board to return to "Active" status.

A registrant may bring an "Inactive" or "Lapsed" or "Retired" license to "Active" status by applying for reinstatement, obtaining all delinquent PDH's and paying the appropriate reinstatement fees. The number of PDH's required shall be a maximum thirty (30). A company may bring an "Inactive" or "Lapsed" or "Invalidated" COA to "Active" status by applying for reinstatement and paying the required reinstatement fees.
